Jason and the Argonauts' is one of Ray Harryhausen's finest films and contains some of his most memorable creations. Note the additional extras "The Music of Bernard Hermann" and "A Look Behind the Voyage" can be found on various Blu-ray editions of "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" and "This Is Dynamation! Use the thumbs up and thumbs down icons to agree or disagree that the title is similar to Jason and the Argonauts. There is a nice little touch when Jason seeks assistance from the Hera figurehead as the ship and the crew founder in the sea after Talos has toyed with them, when the soft woodwind theme for the Goddess emanates from the rears.

However, this looks and sounds terrific for a film that is, notoriously, difficult to assess in terms of other productions from the period. He found mythological fantasies more exciting than science fiction monsters, and wanted very much to tell the story of the Golden Fleece in classic terms. All this shows that some thought has gone into putting this mix together, that effects haven't just been lashed around the channels for the sake of it. All this stuff sounds good in the mono track, too, but the enhanced involvement we experience with the lossless option just feels more enticing. And so, with a ship he names the Argo -- after its shipbuilder Argos (Laurence Naismith), and a group of well-greased Greeks he dubs the Argonauts -- including the legendary mighty Hercules (Nigel Green) and the cunning Acastus (Gary Raymond), Jason sets sail to the end of the world -- with danger lurking around every corner.

Black levels here can be weaker, though I actually still found them to be sufficient, particularly in the sequences lacking sunlight with the harpies. The entire Harpy sequence in the Greek ruins, as well as an earlier sequence in which Jason is taken to speak to the Gods, were supposed to have taken place at night, and a day-for-night appearance resulting from lower f-stops was intended. Will a pulse-pounding pace, bloody violence and lifelike computer-generated effects create a more real, tangible world filled with heart and emotion?

Despite some grain in the video, and a high def transfer that perhaps reveals a little too much of the original master, as well as a story that doesn't really have much story, Jason and the Argonauts still maintains its "status as a classic and ground-breaking film. DTS-HD Master Audio, English Mono with English subtitles and English captions for the hearing impaired. But nefarious foes await Jason and his able crew as monsters, both man and magical, are out to stop him before he reaches his destination. Definitely crying out for a 21st C remake, but only in the hands of sympathetic director with good cinematography.Jason and the Argonauts' shines even more in the audio department--as this Blu-ray not only includes the original mono soundtrack from past releases, but Sony's engineers have also remastered the track to provide an all-new DTS-HD Master Audio 5. Real "severe" applies to dozens of shots in the Marshal Thompson adventure movie Flight of the Lost Balloon, which seems to have been lost for good, as it hasn't played anywhere in ages. The added color detail of Blu-ray brings out hidden character in the main title artwork, and gives the green highlights on Talos' bronze skin more definition. In his old "Film Fantasy Scrapbook" Harryhausen mentioned that he was impressed by the fact that the hero Jason's big quest is really a raid for loot; the Argonauts are little more than thieves. Like the transfer, this is a near-reference restoration and easily the finest presentation Argonauts has ever seen on home video.

This film is regarded as a classic, and when considering when the film was made and the technical accomplishments it achieved it doesn't take long to know why, the story is of myth and legend and has all the elements of high fantasy, yes there are moments of cringe but they come with a smile which makes them more enjoyable. Earlier featurettes reprised are the docu "The Ray Harryhausen Chronicles" and the testimonial interview montage "The Harryhausen Legacy"; and the charming John Landis interview with Ray. Plus, we get a fine set of Original Storyboards for the Skeleton Sequence to see how well the film matches up to what Ray Harryhausen had in mind.
