Description

I wanted to bring my knowledge of mental health and mindfulness to the fore in the design process, helping clients create buildings that would make their users happier and promote wellbeing. Given that we spend over 80% of our time in buildings, shouldn’t we have a better understanding of how they make us feel?

With The Happy Design Toolkit, learn how your buildings can encourage healthier lifestyles through a happier and more inclusive built environment for all. I found that developers and operators were becoming increasingly interested in the wellbeing of their residents –albeit this was mainly physical, rather than mental wellbeing. Each chapter of ‘Happy by Design’, out on RIBA Publishing, covers a specific area of design and interior design that needs to be considered, such as light, nature and materials. Ben’s second book ‘ The Happy Design Toolkit’ - which offers more practical advice on how to create buildings for our mental wellbeing - was published in March 2022. Reduce the amount of excuses you have by making it easy to exercise, whether this is through a bicycle hanger by the front door, or a small workout space, with yoga mat and hand weights in the corner of a room that’s ready to go whenever you are.Spaces such as libraries or galleries are the exception, where direct sunlight can often damage books or displays. As a practice, we specialise in residential architecture and had been doing a significant amount of work in the emerging built to rent (BTR) and co-living sectors throughout the UK. From the paint color that’s been named the happiest to the science of getting a good night’s sleep, Happy by Design offers bite-sized and affordable design ideas that are accessible to all—from a young renter in an urban apartment to a busy family in their own home. If you’d like to find out more about Happy by Design, or would like to hear from some of our happy clients, our testimonials are a good place to start! They also look timeless, and you can choose from a range of colors and finishes, including natural wood, classic white, bright primaries, and soft pastels.

By taking this straightforward approach, I hope the book will be more accessible to all of us, not simply architects. Features real-world examples including Marmalade Lane co-housing by Mole Architects, Francis Holland School by BDP, Maggie’s Centre Oldham by dRMM Architects, Kings Crescent Estate by Karakusevic Carson Architects and Happy Street by Yinka Ilori.Offering practical insight and visual inspiration on successful lighting solutions and schemes, this accessible lighting design guide offeris a toolbox of techniques to apply in practice. Basing a design advice to achieve well-being or happiness only on a single study sometimes isn't exactly objective in my opinion. Also known as The Mindful Architect, Channon explains his own motivation for producing the book: “I wanted to create something that was accessible, functional and empowering. Incredibly professional, and understanding of my vision which helped me to achieve exactly what I was looking for.
