In my lifetime - The Queen Mother; Queen Elizabeth II; Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; Princess Margaret; Edward VIII Duke of Windsor following his abdication from the throne; Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, an American socialite and wife of the former King Edward VIII. She is intent on studying child psychology at Glasgow University (would this have been open to women in the 1930s, or even available as a subject at all? To answer a question as vital as the number of coffee cups consumed while reading, there are exactly 18 books in the Fern Britton series. Of course today, the Royal Family’s private lives are far more well documented but in the 1950’s it was quite different and as the first servant to cash in on the private lives of the royals, Crawfie was ostracised by the royal family and they never spoke to her again.

It is a great read that paints a vivid picture into the inner workings and personal lives within the Royal household. However I also feel that perhaps the palace were at fault for not being clear enough in some of their later intentions when it came to Marion’s writing. Sadly Crawfie was blinded by love and possibly coerced into selling her story which ruined her life. I love all things Royal and enjoyed The Crown, but what a wonderfully, engrossing story by Fern Britton, new author to this reader.

I do believe as Fern does that she was mistreated by the Royal family but readers you will have to make your own decisions when you read this marvellous book. The Good Servant, a book that is fiction based on fact about an ordinary woman in Dunfermline, Scotland, whose life turned into the extraordinary, in this fascinating and engrossing book. And for the most part it is, until she meets George, older than her, but with the ambitions of becoming Marion’s husband much to the delight of Marion’s mother. This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. As the years pass, much of the story is told using the device of letters between Marion and Sir Alan Lascelles ("Tommy") and between Tommy and his wife Joan.

We will never know the true nature of the relationships between servants and monarchy, nor what was said and what each individual was motivated by, so I have chosen to side with Fern, opting for the version that this very loyal and extremely naive young lady truly loved her Royal charges.

However after a interim job before she starts university with Lord and Lady Elgin, she comes to the attention to the Duke and Duchess of York and suddenly finds herself in London, in Windsor Castle. The goods do not need to be in their original packaging however in a sellable condition, and at your own cost and risk. She served them through key moments in history – the abdication, Elizabeth’s father, George VI becoming king, and the horrible realisation at the age of 12 that she would become queen. Marion is a young Scottish woman who becomes a governess to two princesses – Princess Margaret and the princess who became our queen – Queen Elizabeth II.

Whilst it is widely accepted that she had been under the influence of George Buthlay, who she married in 1947, Marion was absolutely devastated when she realised the implications and she never really recovered, living the rest of her life under a cloud away from everyone she had once been so close to. The story follows Marion, soon given the nickname “Crawfie” as she is enveloped into the heart of the royal family. To base a conjectural friendship, which becomes so important to the story presented by The Good Servant, on just one known meeting seems risky. The sale of customised goods or perishable goods, sealed audio or video recordings, or software, which has been opened. For someone who doesn’t consider herself a royalist and has never watched a single episode of The Crown the author did a splendid job of arousing my interest in a subject I have paid very little attention to previously.
