Description

The first and most obvious reason not to use bleach on your Japanese knotweed is that it's unlikely to have the desired effect.

Chemical weed killers can be highly effective in controlling a wide range of weeds, offering fast and visible results. We do not recommend using any chemical without first consulting the Material Safety Data Sheet which can be obtained from the manufacturer and following the safety advice and precautions on the product label. You can always use a hand weeder to pull out any weeds with deep roots and a garden hoe will make the job much easier.IMPORTANT NOTES - This product is not for use on lawns, flowerbeds, vegetable plots or around trees and shrubs.

I've read that bleach will absolutely kill everything apart from the hardiest such as knotweed and ivy. Quote from: Tony Soprano on April 05, 2017, 04:43:21 am Jobs likw that wind me up cos dont lok after their property and expect you to do a miracle ie close the block back up which became seperated by all the weeds. The misconception that bleach is not biodegradable comes from the fact that it reacts with organic material in drinking water treatment (and I presume in cleaning as well) to form chlorinated organic byproducts that are not as easily degraded.Although there is no evidence to suggest that COVID-19 can be transmitted via swimming pool water, surfaces such as railings and the hands of possibly infected individuals could be disinfected by coming into contact with the chlorinated swimming pool water. As Japanese knotweed is spread through the root system rather than the leaves or pollination, treating Japanese knotweed with bleach will only damage the insignificant part of the plant.

It can burn the skin and irritate mucous membranes (in the eyes, for example), particularly in its undiluted form. Tool blades (secateurs, pruning knives, grafting tools, knives and so on) should be disinfected between plants to prevent disease spread. Generally speaking I think manufacturers recommend spraying when the weeds are "actively growing", or put another way, when most of the plant is available to spray with weed killer. The intimate connection with the garden and the tactile experience of pulling weeds by hand can be deeply satisfying. Another, slightly more noxious way to control and kill off weeds is by using the common household substance bleach.

It's fairly common to come across various online 'recipes' or tips involving bleach – but many are extremely bad ideas in practice. We've stubborn brambles coming up the side of our patio and boiling water and salt is the best way we've found so far to effectively kill them.

It is composed of a sodium cation (Na+) and a hypochlorite anion (ClO−); it may also be viewed as the sodium salt of hypochlorous acid.
