Whether you are expecting your first child, or are experiencing difficulties with an older baby, this comprehensive guide contains all the expert guidance you need to help your baby feed and sleep well. while Delia tells you how to make the perfect omelette, Gina Ford in her baby-care manual The Contented Little Baby Book, draws on 30 years' experience to tell you how to nurture the perfectly happy baby. I didn't get such a strong reaction myself, but I expect I'm more likely to once the kid arrives - though I will say Ford has an unfortunate tendency towards smugness which is not going to help in winning over her critics. What I can say about the above regime and from my own very limited experience is that within reason you can pick and choose the bits that work for you.

A friend who I had not seen for over a year came to visit my new born when he was two months old and said “I have never seen such a happy baby, you are lucky, some people we know have baby that cry’s all the time”. A friend of mine read it and declared she was either going to burn it or give it to me if I was curious. I think Gina’s message can essentially be distilled down to this: “By being consistent and patient with your routine, your child will adapt and know what to expect at what times of the day and night. The other big plus for parents following my routines is that they have free time in the evening to relax and enjoy each other’s company. As I feel that too many couples simply have their entire lives revolve around their children and they do not get enough quality time to spend with each other. Now Poppy is ever so slightly premature and I actually started this blog post before she was born and am continuing it now. Think of this as a mini book review, although unlike a school book review, I am not doing this under duress!

She is one scary woman-- she advocates running a newborn baby's routine like the way you would run the military or boot camp. It seemed like a very sensible plan to get your baby into a routine that ensures she is happy, while also making you feel confident about knowing what to do and when. I also developed a great deal of skepticism upon reading that Gina Ford does not have children of her own. By creating routines that match a growing baby’s innate natural rhythms, Gina prevents the hunger, overtiredness and colic that can lead to excessive crying.I find it hard to believe that any new mother has been able to follow her routines successfully; how on earth you make a three. GF insists on many occassions throughout the book that "her babies" all slept through the night/didn't get colic/blah and therefore her methods are proved correct.

If you are reading this blog post I am assuming that you have at least heard of The Contented Little Baby and it has piqued your interest enough to read my post. Gina says holding babies too much can be tiring for young bodies and can give them the wrong sleep associations. The fact that you are able to understand his needs and meet them quickly and confidently will leave both you and your baby calm and reassured, and avoid any unnecessary crying. Having noted that I was reading the book, my respected friends-with-kids were unanimous in their hatred of the "Queen of routine".We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. She was a very contented baby, and on the rare occasions when she did cry we could suss out what was wrong as we understood her feeding and sleeping patterns so well. Unfortunately, this was too far to the other extreme for me, but I do think it still has a lot to offer. it was a great relief to flick through at 3am when you were trying to remind yourself what you had to do next.
