It’s hard to admit these things to myself (let alone confess to them on my blog) but I’d challenge others to claim they haven’t done or thought similar things when they see someone who is hundreds of pounds overweight about to climb into the airline seat next to them.

Lionel Shriver's novels include the New York Times bestseller The Post-Birthday World and the international bestseller We Need to Talk About Kevin, which won the 2005 Orange Prize and has now sold over a million copies worldwide. The novel eventually breaks down into a kind of meta-fiction in which the earnest, well-meaning Pandora confesses that much of her tale has been lies of one sort or another. But despite some of the more questionable ideas, and despite knowing that it’s just a story, I was cheering Edison on, and inspired by his and Pandora’s attitudes. Pandora is just a wonderful character, so torn between her family and her ties to her brother and the history they share.I listened to the audiobook version of this novel, Big Brother, and it was narrated by Alice Rosengard. Like your cold Aunt Millie who clucks her tongue about the shame of your beautiful face hidden under that fat, this book holds out love for Edison until he begins to lose weight.

Yet, during the 353 pages, Shriver makes the reader see all the problems of the obese: how they got to their obese weight; what a devastating life it is; how society treats the obese; how truly difficult it is to lose weight. Her journalism has appeared in the Guardian, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and many other publications. Good of her to take on a less developed theme in current literature and try to tackle the psychological reactions that people have in these types of tough situations. Consumed with control", he rides his bicycle for hours each day and follows a diet so "stringent" that simply being "in his physical presence" makes Pandora feel "chided". I won’t go into detail about how exactly this book has changed my perspective on people who struggle with weight issues, but it has taught me to look deeper than people’s appearances to really identify and acknowledge that they are in fact struggling.
