Doctor Octopus is my pick for Spider-man’s greatest villain (Sorry—not sorry—Goblin fans), and his first issue is awesome. The battle in the Daily Bugle office really makes this issue with the ending being a particular fave of mine because Betty Brant is awesome. This issue has a lot of good Flash, Liz, and Betty stuff, though Peter continues to be kind of a creep.

Still this book represents the creme-de-la-creme - and anyone with the slightest interest in heroes in tights owes it to themselves to check this out. I do wish the Master Planner’s identity had been revealed with more gravitas, but honestly, I can’t complain. In one of the most famous sequences in superhero comics, Spider-Man saves himself from being crushed and drowned by lifting several tons of metal off his back, silently contemplating his friends and family throughout his efforts. No other comic I've read shows the guy's humor and dramatic perception, his understanding of the media and the skills to tell even the toughest stories so lightheartedly that you can get a huge amount of pleasure from it, more than this one. The story is phenomenal and vintage and unbeatable - i would highly recommend this Omnibus to every comic/graphic novel/history lover . The exploits of Peter Parker were often more interesting than those of Spider-Man, but that's not for lack of quality in either area.

Today, you will either find most comics to be bland and colorless to the point of losing all personality, or too stylized and out of touch with the characters of the comic (or just plain ugly). a collection of storied comic books which pioneered the entirety of the modern-day superhero industry and defined the greatest superhero of all-time for generations to come. It also does it in a way that’s both fun, Peter faking the Sandman photos, and sad, missing a date with Liz. It’s got some good use of the Human Torch as a guest star, and I love the respect building between Spidey and the Torch. There is some very convenient non recreatable mad science where the Scorpion is created in a few hours while Peter and Betty see Ned Leeds off? Fun little thing to notice: you can first see an unnamed Norman Osborn show up at Jolly Jonah’s club in issue 23 at the bottom of page 6.

What has always distinguished Spider-Man from other superheroes for me, especially in his first appearances, is how relatable he is.After an almost literal lifetime of writing and editing, Lee entered new entertainment fields and earned Marvel one opportunity after another.
