Thirteen year old Agatha wanted to be a detective, ever since her mum got her addicted to crime books when she was a little girl. Along the way, I pass doors bearing other staff members’ names and it occurs to me – not for the first time – how many people are involved in the organisation. My best friend; most think we are super-nerds but I don’t mind as he’s crazy smart and my bestie (oops, I already mentioned that). Everyone in the street has their own story, their own reasons for being the way they are, their own secrets.

Sometimes the first book in a series can suffer from a bit of a slow start as the characters are introduced but I found The Secret Key got the balance just right, there are two relatively short chapters that introduce Agatha and then you’re thrown straight into the action and the adventure barely stops until you reach the conclusion. And I couldn’t help notice the box of chocolates on your table, clearly a gift for a lady…” I smile, pleased with my investigatory skills. Obviously I don’t want to give away spoilers but for me it reached a satisfying conclusion, but there were still a couple of outstanding questions, I’m hoping they’ll pop up in a future book but if they don’t I’m still content! Agatha Oddly has been a detective for as long as she can remember – she’s just been waiting for her first big case. My favourite character was probably Agatha Oddly herself but I also quite liked the other characters too.The series begins with The Secret Key, where we meet Agatha Oddly, a thirteen-year-old girl living in London with her family.

Agatha Oddlow has been a detective for as long as she can remember - she's just been waiting for her first big case. Agatha Oddly and the Secret Key reminded me of the mystery books that formed such a huge part of my childhood.

Fitting my head torch, I switch it on, and the bright LED beam illuminates the gloomy, uneven space. Lena Jones does an excellent job of weaving together multiple storylines and clues, creating a puzzle that readers can try to solve along with Agatha and Corvus. The smell that hits me is like seaweed mixed with rotten cabbage – but it’s still far better than when the polluted algae had taken over. The mysteries in the Agatha Oddly Detective Series are well-plotted and complex, with plenty of twists and turns that keep readers guessing until the end.But when an old lady is the victim of a hit-and-run, and strange red slime appears throughout London instead of water, she and her best friend Liam Lau find that they have gotten their biggest case ever (so far). I know I already mentioned her but I’m doing it again, such is my distaste for this person (she’s awful).
