Track 4-6 taken from Brazil (Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Milan 74321 11124-2, 1992). Most artists in the mid seventies played guitar but Elton played piano and I dreamed of being able to play like him. The frustrating bit, of course, was that all of the actual albums contained within the REMASTERED sets were already available separately, but that particular compilation was not. Fortunately for those fans, we’ve just rectified that situation: as of this past Friday, THE OTHER SIDES – a four-CD set – is available independently.

A lot of these b-side tracks were never published anywhere else, so when I realised they were finally released as a special CD collection, I was relieved to have back so much of what I had lost. There are so many accolades used when discussing Kate’s work, and deservedly so, that it seems useless for me to add any more. Also, although the cover is fairly sturdy and appealing the sleeves into which the discs slide tend to leave little marks on discs after many plays. It isn't a complete rarities collection as tracks like The Empty Bullring are omitted, but it saves hunting down all the CD singles and means you can play, for instance, the 12-inch versions of Hounds of Love singles in one go (that's Disc One) or Kate's covers of other peoples' songs (Disc Four).

There is this linear theme if you will, that surfaces though her music and lyrics and through the images she creates in all of her work including this video. But the feeling you get when watching, reading, or listening to her work makes one realize that she is certainly unique and that her contributions to music and film are actually artistic in a pure sense. Back in November, Rhino had a hand in releasing two box sets – or possibly four box sets, depending on whether you favor CDs or LPs, respectively – which were widely considered among the best reissues of 2018: Kate Bush’s REMASTERED sets. THE OTHER SIDES offers a plethora of B-sides, 12” mixes, and other rare tracks, including an entire disc’s worth of covers recorded by Bush, including a couple of classic Elton John songs (“Candle in the Wind,” “Rocket Man”) and “The Man I Love,” written by George and Ira Gershwin. Under The Ivy” is just a handful of piano chords and Bush’s raw voice, with a touch of electronic processing, the singer first beckoning, then imploring a listener to burrow into a secret place, conjuring intimacy, invention, self-discovery and sex with a slightly frightening intensity. As a long time mega fan of the totally unique and fascinating Kate Bush, I was very happy to purchase this wonderful product, which has given me quite a lot of material that I previously did'nt know existed. I'm not sure what else I can add - apart from Kate Bush's curiously moving vocal tone, phrasing and peculiarly English sound seem to work on some other exquisite level. This set finally bundles the evidence: 34 tracks, including some of the avant-pop auteur’s most gorgeous, extravagant, intimate, and bonkers material — b-sides, remixes, and an album’s-worth of stray, often strange covers.

They gave me complete creative control and although it was a bit daunting to be let loose on one of my favourite tracks ever, it was really exciting. Kate Bush will release her The Other Sides B-side compilation as a standalone 4CD set and has also officially made available the video for her 1991 cover of Elton John‘s Rocket Man and spoken about the making of the song and the video. Track 2-8 taken from Ne T'enfuis Pas / Un Baiser D'enfant (French single B-side – EMI 50999 1 65152 7, 1983). To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The four CDs celebrate b-sides, 12-inch mixes, rare tracks and cover versions - with one CD being devoted to covers including Kate's versions of Elton John's 'Rocket Man' and 'Candle in the Wind,' and George and Ira Gershwin's 'The Man I Love'. Vincent Clark, whose confession of tipsy karaoke-ing “Wuthering Heights” is one of the highlights of that delicious 2014 Bush documentary. I have loved Kate's work since the beginning of her career, and I had quite a lot of her 7-inch singles, and rarer 12-inch singles, and I cherished the B-Sides as much as the Title Tracks. The Billie Holiday vehicle “The Man I Love” gets a less-radical transformation, with production/arrangement by George Martin in the style of Lady Day’s 1939 Vocalion recording, complete with muted trumpet.

Track 2-4 taken from The Golden Compass (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Decca/New Line NLR39101, 2007).

stars out of 5 -- "34 tracks, including some of the avant-pop auteur’s most gorgeous, extravagant, intimate, and bonkers material -- b-sides, remixes, and an album’s-worth of stray, often strange covers. Compilation album, released initially as part of the Remastered box set, and subsequently as a stand-alone 4CD set on 8 March 2019. I would love to hear Kate record her version of the Pearls Before Swine song (Rocket Man), that inspired Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s song.
